A-Frames Surf Spot: The Versatile Peak of the Mentawai Islands

What Is A-Frames?

A-Frames is a classic Mentawai surf spot named for its perfectly shaped, peak-style wave that offers both left and right options. Located in the heart of the Playgrounds area, A-Frames is popular for its consistency, user-friendly take-offs, and fun, high-performance walls.

Why Surf A-Frames?

Perfect Peak for All Surfers

A-Frames breaks over a coral reef, creating a true peak that allows surfers to choose between a playful left or a rippable right. This versatility makes it a favorite among groups and surfers of varying skill levels.

Consistent and Reliable

Thanks to its exposure, A-Frames works on a wide range of swell directions and tides, providing reliable surf almost every day. The wave is especially fun in the 3–5 foot range, but can handle a bit more size for those seeking a challenge.

Surfing Tips for A-Frames

Best Conditions

  • Swell Direction: South to southwest swells light up both sides of the peak.

  • Tide: Works on all tides, but mid to high tide is safest and offers the best shape.

  • Wind: Light east or southeast winds keep the faces clean and glassy.

Board Choice

A standard shortboard is perfect for the punchy, maneuverable walls at A-Frames. A fish or funboard also works well, especially on smaller days.

Safety and Etiquette

While the reef is generally forgiving, be cautious at low tide. The lineup can get busy during peak season, so share waves and respect fellow surfers.

The A-Frames Experience

Fun, Social, and Scenic

A-Frames offers a lively, social atmosphere in the lineup and is surrounded by the lush beauty of the Mentawai Islands. Whether you’re looking to practice maneuvers, enjoy a session with friends, or simply soak up the tropical scenery, A-Frames delivers a memorable surf experience for all.

  • It is a left although sometimes in small days the right is also surfed.
  • It is one of the most conscientious waves of mentawai and never gets outdated.
  • It has two sections, the first with a powerful take off followed by a soft wall.
  • The second section is more powerful with a short tube. Sometimes they connect the two sections, but it is normal for people to divide between the two peaks.
  • It is very good to start catching tubes since it is very safe, you never play the reef.
